Purpose
The Tri-Town YMCA is offering an Educational Scholarship to recognize students who demonstrate the qualities embodied by Gernon and Jane Henderson, Lombard residents who possessed the qualities of community involvement, a willingness to help others and a positive attitude toward life. This is not an academic standing or need based scholarship.

Jane and Gernon Henderson Scholarship
Eligibility
High School Seniors who currently attend Glenbard East High School, Glenbard South High School, Willowbrook High School, or Montini High School. Students that are Home-Schooled must reside in Lombard, Villa Park, or Oakbrook Terrace. Students need to be active as volunteers in Tri-Town YMCA programs and activities as a demonstration of their community involvement, willingness to help others, and positive attitude toward life. A minimum of 15 volunteer hours will be required during 2013 for the 2014 scholarship award(s).

Opportunities to serve the community through volunteerism with Tri-Town YMCA include: Healthy Kids Day in April, Tri-Town Golf Outing in June, Christmas Tree Sales in November/December, Camp during winter/spring/summer break, as well as, providing homework assistance in our afterschool program during the school year. (Note: Volunteers working with our children will be required to authorize a background check.) Scholarship Information
Up to 3 Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $800 each. The award money is to be used toward the first year of Continuing Education. This scholarship is not limited to 4-year colleges – applicants may attend 2-year colleges, vocational school and trade schools. Payment will be made directly to the institution. The recipients will be announced at their High School Award Ceremony.

Complete the form describing your involvement in:
• Helping others in your community and church
• School activities, school organizations and school athletics
• Awards/honors/recognitions received

Submit 2 narratives, no longer than 1 page each, describing
a. What achievement has been most satisfying?
b. What did you learn/gain from volunteering at Tri-Town YMCA and how do you think this will affect your future?

Applicants must complete the entire application, utilizing a computer. Hand-written responses will not be considered.
There is no need to include high school transcripts or letters of recommendation. The application and narrative must be received by the Tri-Town YMCA no later than 4:30 PM on January 31, 2014.

Selection Process
All applications will be reviewed by the Tri-Town YMCA Scholarship Committee. A decision will be made, and communicated to the applicants and their schools by the end of March.
